Chapter 13: The Four Stats

Jake was heading south of Cerulean, having exploring the upper side of the city outskirts. He captured a Venonat while he was there. It was about 4:30 PM, and in the summer, there was a lot more day to go, giving Jake plenty of time to explore. Going through the grass, he discovered a Pokemon. It was unlike any Pokemon he has ever seen! He used his Pokedex, and the Pokemon was classified as “Steelkat.” It had a brown body, and metal plates around its ferocious face, and had metal claws, legs and tail.
“Rrrrooorrrww…” said Steelkat.
“Aaaaaahhh!” said Jake, “Go Pikablu!” Pikablu was released from its Pokeball. “Quick Pikablu, use Water Gun!”
Pikablu shot out a stream of water, and it damaged the Normal/Steel type Pokemon. Suddenly, Steelkat jumped and mauled Pikablu’s face, scratch marks appearing on its cheeks. “Pikablu!!!” said Jake, “Use Thundershock!” Pikablu successfully attacked Steelkat with a Thundershock. The Steelkat fainted, and dissolved into the ground. “Well that was a close one. Are you alright Pikablu?” Jake asked while picking Pikablu up with a Super Potion. Pikablu’s face was healed.

It was now dusk, and Jake heard a scream coming from the bushes. He went to investigate. He saw a red-haired 13-year old girl with a towel around her body. She was holding a baseball bat and had an angry look on her face. “Don’t play dumb with me Ash, I know you were spying on me as I was bathing!” she screamed to a boy, evidently the great and famous Ash Ketchum, from Pallet Town, and don’t you fucking forget it. I mean, this kid tells this to EVERYBODY! I’m sure most of these people don’t even know where Pallet Town is, but we’re getting off track here.
“But Misty, I didn’t, honest!” responded Ash. “It was this crazy doppelganger of mine. Pikachu has one too!”
“I don’t believe it moron!” Misty yelled.
“Hey!” interrupted Jake. “Now look, I think both of you should just grow up. Misty, stop bitching at Ash all the time. Ash, stop being an idiot.”
“… Yes sir.” Said Misty and Ash in unison, feeling patronized.
“Wow, I’ve never seen those two act like this.” Said a colored Chinese, most probably Brock, the gym leader of Pewter City.
“You know Ash, I think your problem is, you have low stats.” Jake said. “Stats, there are four of them. First is Fighters Promise, this is essentially how determined and serious you are with becoming a better trainer. Second is Psychic Ability, this is what determines how good you can control Psychic Pokemon. Next, is Awareness, this determines how quick you are to spot Pokemon, and people in need. Finally, Endurance, you know, your stamina. Basically how long you can handle exploring.” Ash, Misty & Brock seemed confused and lost.
“So what does this all mean?” asked Misty, evidently not noticing she doesn’t even know the guys name.
“I get the feeling Ash’s problem is he’s not a serious trainer.” Jake answered.
“That’s not true! I’m a great trainer!” Ash explained loudly.
“Do you even capture Pokemon Ash?” Jake asked. “You cannot be a good trainer without capturing Pokemon.” Ash looked down, but continued to listen. “How many Pokemon have you captured?” Jake asked.
“Just two…” answered Ash.
“TWO?” Jake retorted, “You’re already past Cerulean City, and you only caught two? I have five!”
“Not even a full team? Yeah, that’s a lot to brag about.” Brock whispered into Misty’s ears, and Misty giggling.
“You know what? I think you just need encouragement.” Jake suggested, “Just about an hour ago, I ran into a Pokemon I never even heard of!”
“Really? What?” asked Ash.
“A Steelkat!” Jake answered.
“Wow! I gotta catch one!” Ash darted off into the darkness. “Heeeeeeeeeere Steelkat, Steelkat, Steelkat, niiiiiiiice Steelkat!” his voice screamed from the distance.
“Rrrrrrrrooooooorwwwwww!” an aggressive roar sounded the air.
“Yyyyaaaaaaaahhhh!” screamed Ash, and scratching noises emitted from the darkness. Ash walked back into the camp. “Mom…my!” Ash fainted with a thud.
“… Ash.” Said Jake. “That’s NOT the way to capture Pokemon.”
“Yeah, that is definitely not the way to capture Pokemon.” Said Brock, feeling embarrassed to have witnessed this.
“I’m sure it can’t be that hard to figure out.” Jake said. “Only you can raise your Fighters Promise.” Ash, Misty & Brock seemed to understand. “Now, I must go. Sorry for being condescending, but it’s for your best Ash. I hope next time I see you, you’re a lot better at being a trainer.” Jake walked off and vanished in the darkness.
“Wait! What is your name!?” all three asked in Unison. There was no response.
